Step 4: Reset your folder permissions
Make certain that the folder containing your company’s files is configured to allow for file sharing throughout your network.
If you continue to receive an error message, proceed to Step 5.
Step 5: Fixing via QuickBooks Tool Hub and QuickBooks Database Server Manager
This is the computer on which your QuickBooks company file is stored, often known as the server computer(s). There are other computers that are connected to your network and serve as workstations.
- Go to Network Issues and click on it.
- Select QuickBooks Database Server Manager from the drop-down menu. A prompt will appear if QuickBooks is not already installed on your server computer, and you will be prompted to do so.
- If your company file is visible in the QuickBooks Database Server Manager, select Start Scan from the drop-down menu. If they aren’t already there, choose ‘Start Scan’ and then navigate to the location of your company file.
- The QuickBooks Database Server Manager will instantly fix any firewall permissions that have been compromised.
- When the scan is complete, click on the Close button.
When you’re finished, locate and open the folder that was scanned. Check to see if there is an ND file in the directory. It has the following format: [your company file]qbw.nd.
Scan the folder for a second time. If you don’t see the ND file, proceed to Step 6.
Step 6: Terminate hosting on your workstations
As a precaution, make sure that the option for Host Multi-User Access is turned off on your workstations. These are computers that are connected to your network but do not contain any of your company files.
Your server PC should be the only one that is hosting anything on the network.
- Log in to one of your workstations and launch QuickBooks.
- Do not open the company file on your computer. Instead, go to the File menu and select Utilities from the drop-down list.
- Don’t choose ‘Host Multi-User Access’ if you see the choice on the screen. Move on to the next workstation in the process. This particular one is not the source of the problem.
- If the option to ‘Stop Hosting Multi-User Access’ is available, choose it.

After you have checked all of your workstations, you should proceed to your server computer and reset the hosting settings on that computer.
- Launch QuickBooks on the PC that serves as your server.
- Select Utilities from the File menu by hovering your cursor over it.
- If the option for ‘Host Multi-User Access’ is available, pick it. Repeat this procedure until you reach the ‘Stop Hosting Multi-User Access’ option. This will turn off the multi-user mode.
- Perform the whole process one more time, selecting ‘Host Multi-User Access’ as the destination.
